Troubadours

Welcome to My Year in Live Music, a photo documentary of my live music experiences over the past 12 months. Starting with the Arrogance show in Raleigh on May 13, 2017, the live-music chase has taken me to venues from Saxapahaw, NC, to Manhattan’s Alphabet City. The photos here represent my best attempt to honor the remarkable artists who breathe life into the listening rooms, music halls, saloons and outdoor stages all over the country. The year-long project wrapped May 12, 2018, in Winston-Salem with “Yesterday’s Tomorrow: Winston’s Pyschedelic 60s … and Beyond,” a show that grew out of Chris Stamey’s new memoir. The show tracked the origins of the local indie music scene and brought all the NC legends together – Mitch Easter, Peter Holsapple, Don Dixon and Stamey among them. For one night, on one stage, one troubadour after another took the mic. The speakers were stacked 20-feet high, and the lighting gave the set a tie-died look. It was, as a friend described, a major musical event. It was a Hollywood ending to My Year in Live Music. Crossing over all the towns and all the music styles, troubadours distinguish themselves by creating live experiences that engage our senses in ways technology hasn’t replicated. It is a high calling. I hope my project inspires some of you to dial up the events calendar in your town and find a live show you can attend tonight.
